Wavemaker’s Dan Empowers People with Career-Boosting Skills in New Course

Apr 9
At Wavemaker, we believe that digital access is only the first step - what follows is real opportunity. That’s why we’re thrilled to share the latest chapter in our mission to empower young people through the launch of our Essential Skills for Career Success course, led by none other than our own passionate Digital Skills Trainer, Dan.

This four-week course marks an exciting continuation of our partnership with JET (Jobs, Employability and Training). The learners attending have already been on a transformative journey with us: through previous workshops, they've each received a Chromebook from the Wavemaker Device Bank to support their development. Now, they're returning - laptops in hand, ready to take their next steps towards a successful career.

A Structured Pathway to Career Readiness

The course has been carefully crafted to provide a step-by-step guide to workplace readiness, helping participants move from uncertainty to confidence. Here’s what’s included in each weekly session:

Week 1: Crafting Your Perfect CV & Cover Letter
Dan kicked off the course by showing learners how to make a strong first impression on paper. From choosing the right CV format to tailoring applications using keywords and industry expectations, learners left with polished CVs and compelling cover letters ready to go.

Week 2: Professional Communication & Etiquette
In this session, participants explored digital professionalism - a crucial but often overlooked skillset. From crafting effective emails and understanding etiquette to navigating LinkedIn and creating professional profiles, learners gained insight into how to present themselves confidently online.

Week 3: Searching for Jobs
This session gave learners the tools to navigate modern job markets, using platforms like Indeed and LinkedIn to search and apply for roles. Dan also introduced them to the concept of a Job Application Tracker to help keep things organised and avoid missing deadlines.

Week 4: Interview Techniques
Finally, Dan helped the group step into the spotlight with practical strategies for nailing interviews. Covering everything from STAR responses to body language and follow-up emails, this session helped learners build the confidence to walk into interviews well-prepared and self-assured.

More Than a Course - It’s a Journey

What makes this initiative special is that these young people are not just students; they are returning learners who have already benefited from Wavemaker’s digital inclusion efforts. They are walking into the room with their own devices, using tools that they’ve received thanks to Wavemaker and JET's shared belief in unlocking potential through access and upskilling.

“Success is not the result of one big step, but of small, consistent actions over time.”

Thank You, Dan!

We couldn’t be prouder of Dan’s work in empowering the next generation of job seekers. This course isn’t just about jobs - it’s about confidence, independence, and dignity. And thanks to initiatives like the Device Bank and our ongoing collaboration with JET, we’re seeing that vision come to life.
